Your breasts may appear deflated as a result of loss of
volume and/or the nipple/areola may be enlarged from the
prior stretching.
A breast lift or mastopexy can reshape the breast and
tighten the existing skin. In addition, a breast lift can create a
fuller more natural appearing breast and raise the position of
your nipple. In some cases, the insertion of an implant is
combined with a breast lift to create a full, firm, youthful
breast. There are a number of plastic surgeons performing
breast lifts. However, like most things not all techniques are
the same. Most of the traditional mastopexy techniques only excise the excess skin and rely on the skin to maintain the
result over time. This generally results in recurrent drooping of
the breast with time because the loss in skin elasticity was the
problem to begin with. Dr. Desai believes that in addition to
the removal of skin, the breast gland has to be reshaped and
elevated to create a longer, more natural appearing outcome.
In addition, he has gained experience using your own body's
tissue to augment your breast shape and volume. This can be
combined with an arm lift or upper body lift to maximize
outcomes.
Our cosmetic surgery team will guide you through the
process. At the Desai Center of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, we believe that
patients, their desires, and anatomy are all unique. Therefore, Dr. Desai evaluates
each patient and creates a customized surgical plan for all of his patients. To

Breast Lift / Mastopexy – Body Contouring Surgery in Jacksonville
Breast Lift or Mastopexy is performed by making incisions around the nipple and areola
complex, below in a vertical direction, and in your breast fold. The
nipple is left attached to the breast tissue so that the blood vessels and
nerves going to the nipple are preserved. The excess skin tissue is removed,
and the breast is reshaped and elevated to create a natural shape and
contour that is better proportioned to your body. In some instances your
body's own tissue is used to create a more fuller appearing upper pole of the
breast (i.e. cleavage). The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis under general
anesthesia. To learn more, please schedule a consultation with Dr. Desai and
our Jacksonville plastic surgery team.
Preparing for your Jacksonville Breast Lift / Mastopexy
Who is a candidate for a breast lift body contouring surgery?
Women who are in good health that have sagging of their breasts and desire
a more youthful look are candidates. Women that do not smoke and do not
plan on having more children are ideal candidates because pregnancy can restretch
your skin and offset your surgical results. Please call our Jacksonville
cosmetic surgery team at
(904) 262-DESAI (3372) to schedule a consultation and to learn more
about this procedure.
How do I prepare for my breast lift body contouring surgery?
Smoking can result in significant complications including loss of the nipple areola
complex as well as wound healing problems due to the decrease in
circulation to the skin. Therefore, we ask all patients undergoing breast lift
surgery to quit smoking 1 month prior and after surgery.
We ask patients to stop taking medications that may increase bleeding
including aspirin, Plavix, NSAIDS (i.e. ibuprofen, Advil, Alleve, etc), and
herbal supplements like vitamin E. Patients should be in good
health and ensure they have their blood pressure controlled.
In addition, nutritional supplementation is an important part of the healing
process before and after surgery. A full blood panel including nutritional
parameters will be obtained and we encourage all of our patients to begin
protein shakes or juices 3-4 weeks before and after surgery.
Recovering after your Jacksonville Breast Lift / Mastopexy
Our Jacksonville cosmetic surgery team will help ensure a rapid recovery. As
you heal, it is important to keep well hydrated and nourished, as nutrition is an
important part of healing.
Patients should wear a supportive bra for 3-4 weeks after the operation.
Under most circumstances, no drains are used after surgery and all the
sutures are dissolvable.
As the incision begins to heal (i.e. after 3 weeks), there are a number of
things you can use to help minimize the size and appearance of the scar.
Massaging the scar with firm finger pressure will help the scar blend in and
decrease the swelling. In addition, paper tape and silicone gel sheeting have
both been shown to help minimize the scars with time. Some commercially
available products such as Mederma or vitamin E may also have some
benefit. To learn more, please schedule a consultation with Dr. Desai and our
Jacksonville cosmetic surgery team.
