Eyelid Surgery for Men
A blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that can rejuvenate the appearance of both the upper and lower eyelids. As we age, the eyelids lose their firmness and fullness and the muscles of the eye become lax. As a result, in the upper lids, excess skin causes our eyelids to appear wrinkled and can limit our vision. In the lower lids, excess skin and the drooping of fat and muscle causes changes in the shape of the eyes and in the development of malar bags. A blepharoplasty can address these hallmark signs of aging and restore a youthful appearance. The procedure can be performed on the upper and/or lower eyelids and is often combined with other procedures, such as a brow lift, face lift, and mid-face lift.
There are a number of different ways to perform a blepharoplasty and the decision whether to remove skin, skin + muscle, or skin + muscle + fat depends on your particular surgeon. After carefully evaluated the aging process and what makes eyelids look young, Dr. Desai's approach is centered around volume preservation. Most surgeons and traditional techniques incorporate a significant amount of fat and muscle removal, which results in a hollowed, cadaveric appearance to the lids. Some good examples are the following celebrities. You can see when they were young, they had full upper lids, but after undergoing traditional eye rejuvenation procedures, their upper lids have a hollowed out appearance.

At the Desai Center of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, the fullness of the lids are maintained or restored. You can observe the following celebrities to convince yourself that fuller upper lids represent youth and beauty.

Lower Eyelid Surgery for Men, Cosmetic Surgery in Jacksonville
Lower eyelid surgery and rejuvenation also has many variables. Dr. Desai carefully evaluates many variables to maximize the aesthetic results. The following factors need to be taken into account:
- Does skin need to be removed?
- Does the fat need to be repositioned to correct the bags and blend the lower lid and cheek margin
- Does the lower eyelid need to be elevated with a suspension procedure
- Would you also benefit from a mid-face or cheek lift?
The incision for lower eyelid surgery is on the inside of the eye or just under the lash line if skin needs to be removed. Both heal quite well and become imperceptible with time. Please call our Jacksonville facial plastic surgery team at (904) 262-DESAI (3372) to schedule a consultation and to learn more about this procedure.
Preparing for your Jacksonville Eyelid Surgery for Men
Who is a candidate for eyelid surgery / blepharoplasty for Men?
Men of all ages with impaired vision, excess skin, malar bags, or tired appearing eyes are candidates for eyelid surgery. Most patients are in the forties to sixties, but both young and older patients may benefit from a blepharoplasty.
Patients who have had LASIX surgery should wait at least 6 months prior to undergoing eyelid rejuvenation surgery. In addition, they should consult with their ophthalmologist prior. Patients with Graves, other thyroid disorders, or myasthenia gravis should alert their physician, as precautions may need to be taken.
How do I prepare for my eyelid surgery / blepharoplasty for Men?
We ask patients to stop taking medications that may increase bleeding including aspirin, Plavix, NSAIDS (i.e. ibuprofen, Advil, Alleve, etc), and herbal supplements like vitamin E. Patients should be in good health and ensure they have their blood pressure controlled.
Recovering after your Eyelid Surgery / Blepharoplasty for Men
Our Jacksonville facial plastic surgery team will help ensure a rapid recovery. As you heal, it is important to keep well hydrated and nourished, as nutrition is an important part of healing. In addition, sleeping with your head elevated helps blood drain and minimizes bruising and swelling.
The mild pain associated with eyelid surgery is generally well-controlled with oral pain medications and usually improves in the first few days. Your eyes will have bruising and swelling and this improves in the first few weeks. Patients can return to work within 10-14 days.
Risks associated with eyelid surgery are asymmetry, prolonged eyelid swelling, abnormal scarring resulting in eyelid descent, difficulty closing your eyes, and/or ocular irritation. In extremely rare circumstances, bleeding within the eye may cause an increase in pressure. If you have worsening eye pain and/or changes in vision, consult your doctor immediately as surgery to relieve the pressure in your eye may be required to prevent permanent damage.
